Research
Research Interests and Research Abstracts:
1. Estimation of human postmortem interval (PMI) and its application in forensic identification
The estimation of human postmortem interval (PMI) is one of the difficulties in the practice of forensic medicine at home and abroad. Accurate estimation of PMI is conducive to delineating the range of investigation quickly and locking suspects in time. Up to now, domestic and foreign PMI estimation lacks a way to “quantify”. It still mainly relies on the traditional ways, such as corpse phenomenon, which may lead to considerable errors. Based on the regular pattern of RNA degradation, the team successfully built a quantitative mathematical model of human PMI, which established a new method of PMI estimation and created a new research field of human PMI estimation. This project won the second prize of the 16th Shanghai medical science and technology award in 2017.
2. The identification and application of specific biomarker for mechanical asphyxia
The accurate diagnosis of death due to mechanical asphyxia is always a difficult point in forensic identification. For lacking specific biomarkers for mechanical asphyxia, it is hard to diagnose the death as asphyxiation death, which brings troubles to criminal investigations and trials. Up to now, the team has discovered a series of significant indicators, such as mir-122, DUSP1 mRNA and KCNJ2 mRNA, which can be the potential specific biomarkers for mechanical asphyxia and may solve the problem in the accurate diagnosis of death due to mechanical asphyxia.
