Research Interests

Dr. Gao’s research interest is in the area of innate antiviral immunity, especially those involved in hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and persistence.
Chronic HBV infection is a major public health challenge worldwide. Although effective vaccine against HBV now exists, there are still more than 350 million chronic carriers, most of whom in Asia. Only in China, there are 130 million chronic carriers. The current anti-HBV strategies such as type I IFN and lamivudine are either fraught with adverse reactions or the rapid emergence of drug-resistant viral strains during the prolonged therapeutic treatment.
With the aim to develop new therapeutic strategy for chronic HBV infection, Dr. Gao’s research studies are focused on the innate anti-HBV signaling pathways, with a special interest on the possible involvement of autophagy, inflammasome activation or epigenetic modifications in these processes.
