The Department of Immunology, Basic Medical College of Fudan University (formerly the Department of Immunology, Shanghai Medical University) was founded in 1987. The founding faculty members were from the Department of Pathological Physiology and Microbiology, including Lin Feiqing, He Qiuzao, Wu Housheng, Yu Chuanlin, Lin Yunlu, Xie Qi who were the pioneers and well-known scholars of immunology research in China.

After more than two decades of growth and development, the Department of Immunology has forms ateam of faculty members with rich teaching experiences and innovative research. The department currently consists of 5 professors, 3 assistant professors,2 young principal investigators, 1 assistant investigator, 2 lecturers and 5 teaching and research staff members. The department also has 5 visiting professors from other institutions. The present director of the department is Professor Chu Yiwei. In 2005 and 2010 the Institute ofImmunobiology and Biotherapy and Research Center were set upto facilitate the immunology research.

The research directions of the department include: tumors and tumor immune biotherapy; autoimmune diseases and immune regulation; development and regulation of immune cells; mechanisms related to innate and adaptive immunity in infectious diseases; immunity and aging; immunity in tissues and organs.In addition to research, the Department of Immunology also offers theory and lab courses in basic immunology and clinical immunology toall undergraduate students and graduate (master and doctoral) students of Basic Medical College of Fudan University.
