Course Objectives:to provide an overview of basic and clinical immunology, to help students master the essential immunology concepts and principles, and develop basic experimental skills and techniques in immunology. Through the course, students will be able to explain the pathophysiology of the clinical problems, which is beneficial for passing USMLE Step I.
Course Description:MBBS Immunology is one of the core courses in the six-year medical program for internationalstudentswhomajorinClinicalMedicine.Itisalecture-basedcourseandissupplementedwith laboratory sessions. The course begins with introducing the innate immune system and how innate immunity leads to the activation of adaptive immunity; how T and B lymphocytes, the key players of adaptive immunity, are generated, activated and finally mediate cellular or humoral immunity. Then the course transitions to different immunopathological conditions including allergy, autoimmunity, hypersensitivitiesandimmunodeficiency.Thetopicsoftranslationalimmunologyincludingtransplantation immunology and tumor immunology will also be covered. The laboratory sessions (6 in total) introduce classic experiments and basic lab skills in immunology.
Evaluation and Grades:There will be one quiz for the innate immunity sessions, one oral presentation (topics will be assigned in the middle of the course) for the adaptive immunity sessions, and one review article(topicwillbeassignedtowardstheendofthecourse)fortheimmunopathologysessions.Finalexam lasts 2hours.
